Innovation Quarter YMCA branch in 525@vine makes a great fit

It’s Wake Forest Innovation Quarter’s body shop.

Located in the 525@vine building, the newly opened Innovation Quarter branch of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina offers the latest in fitness equipment, group exercise classes and specialized training in spacious quarters.

YMCA-Bikes“We like the energy that is being created in the Innovation Quarter and we wanted the Y to be part of it,’’ said Curt Hazelbaker, president and CEO of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. “Long term, we want the Y to be a key component to why people choose to work or live in the Innovation Quarter.”

Innovation Quarter President Eric Tomlinson, Ph.D., D.Sc., considers the Y’s opening a major step forward in the district’s evolution.

“The addition of the YMCA to Wake Forest Innovation Quarter advances our creating a dynamic epicenter of commerce and culture by providing services to support work-life balance and healthful living,’’ he said.

The Innovation Quarter Y features cardio machines, cycle and group exercise studios, a free-weight area and men’s and women’s locker rooms, plus a trained wellness staff that includes personal trainers.

The branch’s current operating hours are from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The group classes, which range from Body Combat to Zumba, are offered at various times during the day.

So far, members are mostly using the 10,000-square-foot facility before and after work and at lunchtime, said Adam Key, associate wellness director at the location. But that’s likely to change as the number of people working and living in and near the Innovation Quarter continues to increase. Carrie Collins, vice president of marketing and communications for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, said the organization hopes that the branch will eventually have between 800 and 1,000 members.

“This is a great location,’’ Collins said. “We just love the urban and vibrant feel.’’
