From its first tenant, Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Innovation Quarter has been a leading center for discovery. It has become home to many scientists and researchers from Wake Forest School of Medicine and Wake Forest University.
Biochemistry and Structural Biology
The Biochemistry and Structural Biology programs featured here are: Proteins: Structure, Function and Genetics; Lipids Involved in Signal Transduction; and Lipid: Protein Interactions, Cancer and the Molecular Basis of Disease.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a department within a medical school and part of a clinical division whose research and educational programs reside within the Virginia Tech–Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences. This unique position provides faculty and students on the Wake Forest and Virginia Tech campuses with a rich environment that encourages engineering research focused on relevant clinical and biomedical problems.
Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma
The Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma strives to establish and lead a U.S. and worldwide collaborative network of hospitals to reduce death and disability after injury to children younger than 18. The Institute: redefines contemporary treatment methods for childhood injury and disability; provides an infrastructure to conduct research to evaluate the validity of new techniques and innovation of care; educates health care providers; establishes a Worldwide Communications Center to disseminate knowledge and to increase public awareness; and advocates for laws and prevention through effective partnerships.
Lipid Sciences Research
The Lipid Sciences Research Program at Wake Forest School of Medicine is one of the largest and longest-running research activities integrating basic and clinical investigation at the school. The research consists of cutting-edge genetic, molecular and nutritional research into the causes and prevention of epidemic diseases. A major focus is to find interventions that will help prevent heart disease; asthma, diabetes and obesity are targets as well. The program includes a longstanding NIH-funded program project grant in lipoprotein research as well as the Botanicals Research Center. It also is the home of the School of Medicine’s Transgenic Mouse Core facility.
Microbiology and Immunology
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Wake Forest School of Medicine has two major missions: research and teaching. The teaching mission involves training PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, as well as providing courses in immunology and microbiology to medical students.
Physician Assistant Program
The Physician Assistant Program at Wake Forest School of Medicine is a graduate level program that has a unique history of curricular innovation using clinical problem-based learning strategies that emphasize a small-group approach to learning. Graduates of the program complete a 24-month course of study and are awarded a Master of Medical Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies. One class of 48 students is enrolled in early June every year.
Physiology & Pharmacology
The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology at Wake Forest School of Medicine is dedicated to excellence in the education and training of medical students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and the pursuit of excellence in research. The primary research expertise includes cardiovascular, aging, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and neuropsychiatric disorders.
Preclinical Translational Services
Preclinical Translational Services is a unit within the Wake Forest Innovations operating division that offers combined staff experience in preclinical services such as surgical modeling and neurology (specifically brain and spinal cord), orthopaedics, cardiovascular, ophthalmic, soft tissue and abdominal surgery in veterinary medicine.
Wake Forest Innovations
Wake Forest Innovations is the new commercialization enterprise of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, launched in the Fall of 2012 to establish and manage new business and partnerships based on innovative products and services arising from ideas, discoveries, and the scientific research assets of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Wake Forest Innovation Quarter
Wake Forest Innovation Quarter is responsible for planning, implementation, development and operations at Innovation Quarter. Its purpose is to create a place where people are inspired to work, want to live, have an opportunity to learn and are able to play.
Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine
The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine is an international leader in the translation of scientific discovery to clinical therapies. The Institute applies the principles of regenerative medicine to treat human diseases and disabilities. Institute scientists have successfully engineered multiple types of human tissues. Work at the Institute already has led to several startups now operating in Innovation Quarter.
